Valladolid, Creative 2019 UNESCO city Valladolid City of Film

After several months of assessment and after passing the national selection and analysis phase, the general director of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture, Audrey Azoulay, has informed about the result of the UNESCO technicians’ work and this has made Valladolid to be recognized as the UNESCO Creative City. Valladolid is part of the exclusive club that meets to around 250 cities of the entire world, around a strong idea: Creativity as the engine for sustainable development of the cities in the 21st century. The University of Valladolid is part of this entire project as a member of the Candidature Committee, and the Chancellor, Antonio Largo, has accompanied the City Mayor, Óscar Puente, and the Regional Councilor of Culture and Tourism, Ana Redondo, during the presentation of such excellent news in the City hall.

This candidature adds a series of particular projects which must come true in the following four years. Some  of them are the following:

1) The creation of a documentation center about cinema, as a place of meeting around the author´s cinema. The provided space for this center is already defined and the first steps given under the name of Space-SEMINCI in the “Exhibition Hall” of the Teatro Calderón. This space will include a projection area, another area of the exhibition for posters, a bookshop, and a library; and finally a café area. In this space, the City hall will organize particular activities for school students, for the elderly, fans and cinema professionals. A center that will work in Networking with a specific area for the promotion of the UNESCO creative cities.

2) The creation of the “Cinema writers’ forum”. Through some of the important institutions linked to local literature writers( Cervantes, Delibes, Guillén, Chacel, Zorrilla…) the generation of spaces serving for reception and support of the scriptwriters of the city and other places which which to share their creative process; and linked it to the world of cinema, with the aid of SEMINCI.

3) The University of Valladolid will be an essential actor so our city is truly creative. Through the UVa the great audiovisual teaching project will be the implementation of a “Cinema Master”, a new academic degree that will be focused on the practiced and theoretical training open to students from the entire world.

4) A set of creation and creators to whom the City Hall is engaged to make easier centers in which develop their abilities. Along with the participation with the Innovation Area and European programs, we will promote that some of the industrial spaces in disuse turn into creative spaces.

In conclusion, Valladolid it was already a City of Cinema, but we can say nowadays, with all the solemnity that brings the UNESCO, we are globally recognized as the “Creative City of Film”, a distinction only 18 cities have in the world.
